大腸激躁症是一種常見的長期、反覆性的疾病，病患會出現腹痛、腹瀉、便秘等症狀，醫師表示，大腸激躁症的病因不明，可能的原因包括心理社會因素、腸道蠕動力異常、腸道敏感度增加以及神經傳導物質的失?。

新光醫院家醫科醫師柳朋馳表示，在西方大腸激躁症的發生率在15~22%；在台灣大腸激躁症的發生率為10~20%，且女性比男性多2倍。大腸激躁症的症狀與其他腸胃道疾病相似，所以，目前醫師在診斷腸躁症之前首先要排除腸道結構性變化。

大腸激躁症可分為便祕型、腹瀉型、混和型、無法定義型，若是便秘型，則可藉由高纖食物、軟便藥等來增加腸胃蠕動；若是屬於腹瀉型，則須用止瀉、抗焦慮藥物等。

憂鬱與便祕型有關連性、焦慮與腹瀉型有關連性，對此，醫師也表示，可能有相關性，但非絕對性。而，飲食習慣、生活壓力、腸道內物質的刺激可能都會影響腸道的運動功能與調適能力。

情緒控管占重要角色，醫師表示，大腸激躁症治療應由生理症狀、情緒壓力的紓解以及生活行為的改變等多方面來著手。
